Switching From Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Medicare Part C, provide Medicare benefits through private insurance companies. Most plans utilize networks (HMOs and PPOs). Enrollees in Medicare Advantage plans typically must use providers in the plan’s network to receive full benefits. Medicare Advantage PFFS plans do not use networks, but each provider you choose to use must agree to the terms of the Medicare Advantage plan every time you receive medical treatment. Many plan enrollees have noted that a much smaller number of providers are available to them on a Medicare Advantage plan as compared to Original Medicare. It is also important to remember that when you are in a Medicare Advantage plan, you are receiving your benefits through a private insurance company, but you will still have to pay the Medicare Part B premium.

Many Medicare Advantage plans will also include Part D prescription drug coverage, which works similarly to stand-alone Part D plans. Although the monthly premiums for Medicare Advantage plans are generally lower than those for Medicare Supplements, determining a true out-of-pocket cost is difficult because of the deductibles, copays, and other usage costs in Medicare Advantage plans which vary from plan to plan and from person to person.

Although Benefit Consultants – Midwest is able to sell Medicare Advantage plans, we don’t believe these plans are stable enough or cost effective enough to be in the best interests of our clients. If you are currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan but are looking for information regarding switching back to Original Medicare and a Medigap plan, we would be happy to help you understand your options, such as guaranteed issue periods for Medigap, when you are allowed to disenroll from your Medicare Advantage plan, and what would be the best use of your premium dollar in your specific situation.
