Medicare Part D, or Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage, helps beneficiaries cover the cost of their prescription medications. This program was created by Medicare but coverage is purchased through private insurance companies. The Medicare website provides a helpful plan finder tool which you can use to determine which of the many Part D plans available will be most cost effective based on your zip code, county, and current prescriptions. You are able to switch Medicare Part D plans every year between November 15 and December 31. It’s a good idea to use the plan finder annually, even if you have no changes in prescriptions. Because the lists of covered medications, copays, deductibles, and premiums for the Medicare Part D plans do change, the plan that is the best fit for you this year may not be your best option for next year.
